The RCHS Panther golf team begins the year with a new coach, a new roster, and big hopes. Coach Jason Gouchenour spends much of his time as Rappahannock's guidance counselor , but is also trying to guide the Panthers to golfing success.
“The hardest part of this game is the mental part,” said Gouchenour.
This is his first year coaching golf, although Gouchenour has been playing the game for the last five years. His coaching background is mostly in baseball and basket ball, before he got out of coaching to get his Master's degree. As a guidance counselor and a coach, he knows how to work with young people, and Gouchenour is enthusiastic about his new sport. Gouchenour does find that coaching golf is very different from his earlier experiences as a coach or athlete.
“Coaclung this sport, you're less intense. It's definitely less intense and more laid back.”
Last year the RCHS panthers finished fourth in the district with a 7-7 record. That team's best player, Senior Jacob Dodson, returns this year hoping to repeat last years MVP season, which included winning individual honors at the Bull Run District Golf Tb urn ament. If Dodson can echo that performance in his senior season, it will be his third straight year of attending regionals. Coach Gouchenour is also expecting good things of Dodson's fellow seniors Alex Sharp and Will Miller.
“Alex and Will both have the potential to shoot well and score low.” said Gouchenour.
