It is said that over 46 million copies of “The Da Vinci Code” have been sold. A movie is being made of the book. The Catholic Church and Opus Dei obviously have been upset by the book and the film. The story fine is now being softened for the movie and reference to Opus Dei may be dropped. The film producers do not want to lose market share by turning off many of the 1.1 billion baptized Catholics around the world, including 66 million in the United States. The book has triggered other money makers. There are Da Vinci Tours in Paris and at one of the sites in the book, Chateau Villette. Books exposing the Da Vinci Code’s story line have been published.
The future of Longlea
For the foreseeable future, Opus Dei plans to continue to operate the Longlea Conference Center for retreats, classes, etc. A consultant, Greg Hamm, now of Reston Group LLC, has been employed by Opus Dei's Wyoming House, Inc., for the past two years to look at a longrange plan for Longlea. He notes that Wyoming House “is intensely focused on maintaining the unique aesthetic integrity of the manor house and its retreat environment.”
