As far as his visit in Sperryville, Mr. Hamner could only stay a few moments but he did take a piece of Sperryville along with him by purchasing local author James Russell’s book, “Beyond the Rim: From Slavery to Redemption in Rappahannock County”.
This past week there was a film crew shooting in Sperryville which, interestingly enough, also had a connection to resident James Russell’s book.
Gail Lowe, a PhD. historian with the Smithsonian’s Anacostia Museum and Center for African American History and Culture was filming a documentary based on Mr. Russell’s work.
For anyone who is not yet familiar with Russell’s book, it tells the story of his greatgrandmother, “Sis-tah Cahline” Terry, who was a slave in Rappahannock County, witnessed the Civil War, and lived to the age of 108.
The crew was filming the documentary at UnCommon Sense, the Old Sperryville Bookshop, and other locations in Sperryville.
