When the SVRS ambulance arrived at the scene, Jonathan Bankston, a released Attendant inCharge from the Washington rescue department was already on the scene giving care with the help of another EMT, having arrived in a private vehicle. They helped Johnson and Scott get the patient into the ambulance. Johnson asked Bankston if he could accompany the patient to the hospital but Bankston didn't realize that neither Scott nor Johnson were released to give care by themselves and said he was unable to come. Scott and Johnson did not volunteer the information that neither of them were correctly certified to transport the patient without a released Attendant-in-Charge. Thinking that the SVRS members had the situation under control, Bankston canceled other ambulances that were coming to help with the patient, and Scott and Johnson transported the patient to the hospital without incident.
“I knew I was violating company procedure, and I didn’t want to drag [Bankston] into the haranguing I thought I was going to receive,” admitted Johnson.
Suspended
Both Johnson and Scott were temporarily suspended for their actions. This incident in itself might not have led to an enforcement action against the entire Sperryville Volunteer Rescue Squad, but it was followed by
