Saturday, October 1 at 8 pm Solo Spirit Jazz pianist Larry Willis grew up in Manhattan’s Harlem, attended New York’s High School of Music and Art and the Manhattan School of Music. He has played on more than 300 records and played or recorded with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Carmen McRae, and Shirley Horn. At the Theatre he will play jazz interpretations of spirituals and hymns from the Afro American church music he heard in his youth. In addition, he will play jazz standards, including Broadway ballads and old hit tunes. • Saturday, October 8 at 8 pm Smithsonian at Little Washington Kenneth Slowik, treble viol; Jonathan Manson, tenor viol; Craig Trompeter, bass viol The Smithsonian Chamber Players’ fourteenth season of music at the Theatre focuses on the “Brilliance of the Baroque.” The opening performance brings English Consort Music from the time of John Jenkins (1592-1678).
