described St. Josemaria as “the saint of the ordinaryEssentially, the organization helps individuals achieve holiness in the course of daily life, with Opus Dei providing spiritual direction.

Anyone can attend Opus Dei's spiritual activities, but joining requires a vocational calling. In committing to Opus Dei, one is regarded as having “a personal call from God to place one's whole life at his service, spreading the message of the universal call to holiness in ordinary work and social life.” One's life, job, and social setting remain as before, but one's “daily life and apostolic efforts should reflect their commitment to God's service.” There are 85,000 members of Opus Dei worldwide, with some 3,000 in the United States. About 98 percent are lay people, and most are married. The priests within Opus Dei come from its membership. Making a commitment to become a member of Opus Dei is a serious undertaking and not something to be taken lightly.

Retreats at Longlea provide a way for a member to quietly think about their life, their relationship to God, and to pray, away from the distractions of the everyday world. There are retreats for men and for women, but not both together. One obvious reason is to prevent distraction, but primarily spiritual direction at retreats is oriented toward a man's point of view, needs, and understanding or a woman's point of view, needs, and understanding. Throughout Opus Dei, this approach allows spiritual formulation and direction to be specifically focused on homogeneous groups, whether male, female, young adults, professionals, children, etc.

At Longlea, weekend retreats begin at 9:30 p.m. on Thursday and end at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. The male and female retreats are held on alternate weeks, with a full schedule running from February through October,
