With the help of Rappahannock farm owner Cliff Miller, Rachel Bynum and Eric Plaksin, two young farmers, have been able to make 30 acres in Sperryville a farm and home of their own. They are the proud owners of Waterpenny Farm, located on the edge of the village.
In its sixth year now, Waterpenny Farm has been successful through the efforts of the young couple and the help of landowner Miller. “We were discouraged by how high the prices for good farm land were and we couldn’t get a good feel for the communities we were looking at,” said Bynum. It was not until Cliff Miller contacted the team, looking for farmers who were interested in farming his land, that they were able to find a place to farm. A history of farming
Miller is the owner of 800acre Mount Vernon Farm in Sperryville, Va. The farm has been in Miller’s family since 1827 and Miller wants it to continue so. At 64 years of age, Miller wants to be sure that his land will continue to he farmed in a manner that is environmentally friendly and hopefully stay in his family for another five generations. In an effort to ensure this Miller is actively seeking young farmers who are willing to work his land over the long term.
