Schuyler, Virginia, the setting for Hamner’s childhood with his seven brothers and sisters later became the basis for two of his best known books, “Spencer’s Mountain” and “The Homecoming” which led to the enduring Walton’s series.
While best known for the show that made “John-Boy” a household name, Hamner also wrote for other television shows including The Twilight Zone and Falcon Crest.
Mr. Hamner’s play “Appalachian Autumn,” written fpr CBS Playhouse, won a Christopher Award and his script for Heidi caused a storm of protest when it aired on television, preempting the final minutes
