As a child, I always thought Labor Day marked the end of summer vacation, and the beginning of school latxm Nothing I was taught in school until high school disabused me of this notion. Then, in social studies, our textbook had a blurb, a little box of text talking about the history of the holiday, with a brief mention that it was to honor labor, honor the workers of society.
Tbday David Letterman, Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien and a host of smaller celebrities regularly get laughs by making fun of people for making their living by working at McDonalds and Wal-Mart. The idea of labor as valuable and dignified is largely lost.
