Since at least the 1970s, all those gains have been slowly eroding away. Health insurance has gone through the roof. In real terms, the minimum wage has fallen. No one has much job security. Union membership has steadily declined. If you talk about unions, rather than thinking qbout living wages, dignity and decent treatment in the workplace, someone will quickly suggest organized crime controls them all. Wal-Mart, the largest private employer in the country- renowned for its low wages and relatively poor benefits has no unionized employees in the U.S. •
But that's enough lament. Right now, to all the mechanics, carpenters, waiters, road crews, landscapers, nurses, retail workers, fast food workers, roofers, painters and everyone else out there who we rely upon to get things done, we salute you this weekend. Enjoy your barbecues and your day olf. As John Lennon once said in a song, a working class hero is something to be.
