RCHS Cross Country has a new coach and a new philosophy.
“We’re trying to put a little more • emphasis on conditioning and keep it absolutely fun,” said new Cross Country Panthers Head Coach Dave Gillis. This may be his first season coaching cross country, but Gillis has extensive coaching experience in soccer, and is himself a former cross country runner. He doubles as a math teacher for Rappahannock, and is a former engineer.
“Teaching is a second career for me. I wish it had been the first,” said Gillis.
In cross country, competitors run five kilometers (3.1 miles) over natural terrain. It’s a sport of endurance, as well as speed, and Gillis is making sure that his team is prepared for the long haul.
“Just working hard is the key,” said Gillis.
