Winter Salts
Salt applied as a deicing agent on streets and sidewalks causes severe damage to many species of roadside and lawn ornamentals. Damage results when salt, dissolved in runoff water, is leaches into the root zone or when it comes in contact with foliage and branches in the form of spray created by passing vehicles.
Symptoms of salt injury may include: Delay in leaf budbreak and flowering, Stunted foliage and buds, Reduced shoot growth. Tip browning. Crown thinning and tufting of foliage at branch tips, Premature fall coloration and defoliation. Twig mortality
In areas subject to salt damage, injury can be minimized by selecting tolerant species when planting.
Some species may include:
Norway Maple • Hawthorn
White oak • Red oak Juniper • Blue spruce • Mugo pine
Calcium chloride, and lawn fertilizer may also be use as effective deicing agent to limit the damage to ornamental planting.
