The Relay for Life is the annual fund raising event of the Rappahannock County Chapter of the American. Cancdr Sodety. The Relay will take place at the Rappahannock County Elementary School on May 20-21. Teams of 10 to 15 people will set up campsites and take,turns moving around a ' track during this overnight event, which is both a celebration of life and a community party. The event is more than a fundraiser. Cancer education takes place. Survivors walk the first lap, symbolizing the progress we have made. Evening luminary ceremonies memorialize those special people who have lost their battles with disease. Actual fund raising takes place before the event as Relay teams’ member? solicit sponsors for themselves and their teams and through other activities such aa jbake sales and yard sales. ,!,
Last year the Rappahannock County Relay raised almost,, $60,000. Over the last 7 years, about $415,000 has been raised for the American Cancer Sodety by fheJtappahannbek Relay ^aife .pver fiO1 percent ofjthfc collected Stiff., within the region"' The other almost 40 percent of the funds goes for public support allocated to national programs for " research, medical grants and fellowships arid supporting services.
Within the county, programs include: Cancer Education. An example is the Health Fair held last year and information at the Relay. Reach for Recovery. This is a program where a trained breast cancer survivor provides assistance to a newly diagnosed breast cancer patient. Tell A Friend. A good way for ypu to joitt in the fight, against cancer isto lead a Relay team. Join us on Thursday, January 19 at the Washington Baptist Church to learn what is involved in being the Captain of a team. Last year, we had 22 teams. Let’s see if we can do even better this year.
