The light was different down by the beach. It had a sparkle to it that did not penetrate the long block back to my house. That was before the storm. That shimmer now reaches much farther, only to illuminate a world unlike home, adding a surreal quality to the debris that my neighbors and I once occupied.
The beach in Bay St. Louis faces the sunrise and the two houses left on my block can now witness Sol emerge from the sea. In the block to the north I believe all but one house 'will be rebuilt or repaired. To the south there is nothing.
Tb the south the more strongly rooted trees survive, the Live Oak, Persimmon, Palmetto Grande, just no homes. For miles. There is not one other structure stand
