of Rappahannock County's Next Step Program, spoke to the board about the programs successes in its first year of existence. Speaking to the board, Hope quantified the achievements of the program, which is intended to encourage RCHS students to attend college. Her numbers included the $12,000 of scholarship money presented to the class of 2005, 450 letters of introduction sent out, and the 134 college applications received from students, which is an all time record at RCHS. Supporting Hope’s numbers was the testimony of RCHS senior Rocio Loya, who credits Next Step with having already received her first college acceptance letter, from Bridgewater College.
Hope stated that this first year for Next Step was a great success and a great start to the program, and asked the board to continue its support of the program.
Public comments
Stonewall District resident Jan Wilcox and the mother of an 8th grader was the first to address the board during the public comment phase of the meeting. Wilcox spoke about the needs of the school band. “The depth of talent and ability [on the band] is amazing,” said Wilcox
According to Wilcox, the band formerly had 38 members, and has grown to its current size of 50 students. She and others involved with the band believe it will reach 60 students
