After a well attended public hearing last Wednesday, January 4, the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to deny a request for the rezoning of a building in Flint Hill, belonging to Peter and Catherine Salvano, from Village Residential to Village Commercial.
The Salvanos, owners of Falkland Gallery in Gainesville, requested the rezoning last September so that they could open a similar art and interior design store in Flint Hill. Although the Rappahannock County Planning Commission and Zoning Administrator John McCarthy had both recommended the Salvanos’ application for approval, in the end it was the repeated protests of the Salvanos’ neighbors that decided the issue.
“I am alarmed by the resistance of all of the neighbors,” said Wakefield Supervisor Roger Welch.
The resistance of those neighbors centered around the location of the proposed business, and how that location would affect traffic and the future of Flint Hill. The Salvanos’ property sits apart from the existing retail businesses of Flint Hill, and is surrounded by private residences and home offices.
January 9. Morris Franklin Riley of Flint Hill arrived at The Rappahannock General District court for an appearance.
Court personnel noticed a strong odor of alcohol and erratic behavior from Riley, and he was charged with Drunk in Public by Deputy Breeden of the RCSD.
January 7. State Trooper KerriAnne Corbett was operating stationary radar on Rt 522 north of Flint Hill when she clocked a tan Acura at a speed of 74 mph in a 55 mph zone.
Trooper Corbett - also observed the Acura driving erratically as it passed another vehicle.
When Trooper Corbett pulled the vehicle over, she noticed a strong odor of alcohol.
Although the driver, John Sweatt, of Chester Gap, registered as being just under the legal limit on a breathalyzer, Trooper Corbett found enough evidence to charge him with driving under the influence.
December 30. A Rappahannock resident called the Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Department to report a Ford Pickup driving erratically on US-211.
The vehicle was located by Virginia State Trooper Derrick Mauck.
Trooper Mauck pulled behind the vehicle and observed the truck continuing to drive
