Two RCHS teachers, Melissa Delcour and Jim West, spoke to the board about the Cambridge program currently being implemented in the Rappahannock County School system. The Cambridge program is an advanced studies course similar to “Honors” or “Advanced Placement” with the difference that it has a standardized curriculum and can be offered alongside or at the same time as Advanced Placement. West informed the School Board that Cambridge is very standardized, and provides the books and teaching parameters. This can be a much different experience than an “honors” class, which has no such standardization, and in his experience, some honors classes actually turn out to be easier than the regular classes because so much depends upon the individual teacher.
“Cambridge has the potential to change the entire school, not just A.P. classes, by developing a culture of excellence within the school and student body” said West. Currently Cambridge is being offered in Rappahannock in the form of the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE,) which is being implemented in the 9th and 10th grades this year. The IGCSE prepares students to take A.P. or Cambridge classes in 11th and 12th grade.
