“It’s been said that it takes a village to raise a child,” began Matthews. “Well, it’s taken a village to raise this child and bring him to this place tonight.”
With that, Matthews thanked all those present for their support and love throughout the years.
Nearly 100 people were in attendance including two that Matthews singled out for special recognition.
“Col. Dickey, you were there for me from the very beginning with your kind words and advice,” said Matthews as Col. USMC Ret Robert Dickey joined Matthews at the front of the hall. Dickey recalled his first meeting with Matthews.
“We were paired in a threelegged race,” laughed Dickey. He was just a boy and I didn’t know how we’d do but we came in second and that was something.”
Matthews then mentioned his uncle, Scott, who died in October.
“I really miss him,” said Matthews, “and I learned so much from him.”
Tm thrilled,” said an elated Pierson. “Its been four years since we’ve had an Eagle Scout.”
Captain Darrow Kirkpatrick from the National Boy Scouts of America emphasized the solemnity and celebration of the occasion.
