The intersection of Fodderstack and Rt. 522 next to the building is widely known to be a dangerous intersection, primarily because sight-lines from cars sitting on Fodderstack waiting to turn onto Rt. 522 are often obscured by cars parked on the side of 522, creating a blind turn. Both the Flint Hill Volunteer Fire Department and Sheriff Larry Sherertz wrote letters to the Planning Commission with concerns about the dangerous affect of increased traffic to that intersection.
Responding to these objections, and taking steps to shield their neighbors from traffic noise, the Salvanos’ proposed to construct a parking area behind their building which would help to prevent additional parking on the street. In addition to traffic concerns, neighbors whose homes adjoin the Salvanos’ like Board of Zoning Appeals member Jennifer Matthews told both the BOS and the Planning Commission that a retail business at that location,which she described as “outside the commercial core,” would alter the nature of Flint Hill, and set a precedent for other businesses outside the core.
