THE RURAL CEMETERY
During this country’s colonial years, the dead were buried in graveyards that were close to churches. As space grew scarce in these favored locations, cemeteries were located further afield. The rural cemetery movement was inspired by romantic perceptions of nature, art, national identity, and the melancholy theme of death. It drew upon innovations in burial ground design in England aid France, most notably the Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris. America’s rural cemeteries were typically established around elevated view sites at the city outskirts. The most prominent American cemetery of this design is the Mount Auburn Cemetery, founded in Cambridge, Massachusetts, by leaders of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society. Like all cemeteries of this type it invites leisurely contemplation.
