And something else ... “My oldest daughter is learning how to drive,” he said. “It makes me feel better that she had a state police officer in the car behind her.”
The future
There has been significant speculation about Warner’s possible political future. Many have pointed to him as a possible candidate for the presidency in 2008. Warner didn’t address that subject specifically.
“I don’t 100 percent know what I’m going to do [after Heaving office],” he said. “I had som^ success in business before, so I might go back there, but I do want to be a part of the debate over these national issues. J want the Democratic Party to fight for the sensible center [of the political spectrum], Probj lems aren’t going to be solved at the extremes.” !
The interview completed^ Warner went back into his office, changed into a leather state police jacket, and went out to the front of the Patrick Henry Building to give a speech extolling the rewards accruing to the state by people riding motorcycles.
There were about a dozen bikes framing the podium, and a crowd of 50 or more, counting photographers and TV people. The Governor spoke from wTJrEten
remarks, but then, ab^ut half-way through — and noting the cold temperature and" the gusting winds — he broke the speech off with, “Well, you get the gist of it.”
Then he tore up the rest qf the speech, shook every hand in sight, and had his photo taken with anybody who wanted, before striding back' inta the building, nine days from the end of his term, with an unknowable but interesting future stretching ahead of him.
