babies hatch and feed on the bagworm, ultimately killing it. Adult wasps then emerge from the bag leaving behind a dead bagworm, usually a male. Male bagworms are parasitized more than females because the wasp’s ovipositor is too short to penetrate the larger female bag.
These large female bags also apparently protect eggs from freezing over the winter. Overwintering insects commonly produce a type of cellular antifreeze to keep from freezing, but bagworms don’t do this.
