“We realized that we wanted to share drumming with a wider array of people,” explained Sirat. “So we began studying with Arthur Hull, who is the father of the modem drum circle movement, and graduated from two of his intensive facilitation training programs and his Rhythmical Alchemy Program.” They then began hosting monthly community drum circles at Belle Meade and Hearthstone School and in 2004 began working with the Headwaters Program, teaching a drumming class for local children as part of the Summer Enrichment Program. In conjunction with Peggy Schadler’s Headwaters class on Mask Making, the two classes work together to create a dance or play using the masks created in class with drumming as accompaniment, which is performed on the last day of camp. “Headwaters is a really fantastic and worthwhile program for the children in Rappahannock County, and we are so happy to be a part of it,” states Sirat.
