After working in retail management for several years, Sirat and Philips moved into gardening work. They specialized in native plant restorations in woodlands, wetlands, prairie and carnivorous bogs, as well as installation and maintenance of water gardens, cutting gardens, herb gardens, vegetable gardens and formal estate gardens. Naturally, after all that gardening experience they serve as the high school gardening teachers at Hearthstone School.
In 1992, Phillips and Sirat began collaborating with local artist Peggy Schadler. Schadler had been making larger-thanlife, paper mache masks, and needed a voice for the characters she was creating. Phillips and Sirat, with their instruments, became the voice. Schadler named the group “Friends of Gaia” and they performed plays and celebrations all over Rappahannock County and around the region, and have paraded through the streets of Sperryville, Washington and
