In each game, the Rappahannock County High School boys basketball team plays three, strong quarters and can keep pace with its opponent. Ibo bad that games are four quarters long.
“It’s one quarter every game. Poor shot selection. That’s a good way to say it,” Rappahannock head coach Bob Czekaj said after his visiting Panthers propped a 53-37 decision to Madison Friday night in Bull Run District action. The loss left Rappahannock with a 0-4 district mark, 0-15 overall.
The Panthers host George Mason Friday night and travel Wednesday night to Clarke County. Just as in several previous games, Rappahannock turned in stretches of excellent play. Madison led, 25-15, at the half, but Czekaj walked into the locker room and told his players that they were well within range of catching and passing the Mountaineers in the fined two quarters.
“I can only tell them what to do,” he added. “I can’t do it for them. You can’t score from the bench. Be selective in your shots. Get defensive stops. Get back in the game.” But when the Panthers returned to the court, they did not follow Czekaj’s instructions. The shots never fell. The defense dropped off. Eight minutes later, Rappahannock trailed Madison, 45-20.
