Richard Lykes’ article in this edition about the amazing Kid Pan Alley concerts with songs written by children from three county schools. I want to tell you how Paul Reisler makes this miracle of creativity happen in the classroom. Paul begins by asking what the children want to write about. They start generating ideas which are written on the board. Then Paul and his assistant guide the children through the often free flowing, creative process to expand their ideas, gradually pulling them together into themes and, ultimately, a song. The class rehearses a bit and then the rest of the miracle happens...Paul records the song and gives the teacher a CD with the class singing their own song. In one hour the wonders of modem technology and the ageless and precious creative process come together to give our students the opportunity to experience themselves as creators (not just consumers) of music. It does not get much better than that! We so much appreciate the total community effort by the children, administrators, parents, volunteers, financial supporters, Paul and the Kid Pan Alley Band that made these two magical nights possible at the School House. In one song the children said:
...in a perfect world
I want to grow to be a writer
And I could right the whole world’s wrong
There’d be no war or hunger
And all hatred would be gone...
I think that speaks to the miracle of Kid Pan Alley!
