More recently intersex fish were found in the Cowpasture River, part of the James River system. Blazer speculates that the only reason intersex fish haven’t been found in the York and Rappahannock systems is the fact nobody has looked.

“I don’t think the intersex condition has any direct bearing on the fish’s edibility,” Don Kain said — he is water compliance and monitoring manager for the Valley Region of the state’s Department of Environmental Quality. “And we have no indication this is affecting the water quality.”
