Kain pointed to the mercury contamination of the Shenandoah as an example. In 1929 DuPont opened a yarn factory in Waynesboro, on the banks of the South Fork of the Shenandoah. For the next two decades the plant used mercury in its manufacturing process. Although the use of mercury ceased in 1950, there still are advisories against eating too much fish caught in the Shenandoah because of mercury levels. Meanwhile, the fish kills continue. The latest was on the Shenandoah in December. For the first time species other than the sunfish family were involved. As for the smallmouth, the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries estimates as much as 80 percent of the river’s smallmouth bass have died. No phenomena would be complete without a final twist. Rappahannock River smallmouth fishing is expected to be fantastic this year, according to VDIG. There was outstanding spawning success in 2004 and 2005. Fish born in a specific season are called a year class. Those two year classes are young adults in the 12-inch range. They are about the size and age of the Potomac River system smallmouth that went haywire.
