Smallmouth Bass
Smallmouth bass are members of the sunfish family that also includes largemouth bass, crappie, bream, and the several varieties of sunfish. It’s native domain was the Mississippi River basin and the great Lakes. It was introduced in Virginia shortly before the start of the Civil . War. • World Record: 11 pounds, 15 ounces caught in 1955 at Dale Hollow Reservoir in Tennessee. • State Record: 8 pounds, 1 ounce caught by Donald Ww/; Eaton Jr. while fishing the New River on March 12, 2003. • Habitat: It prefers the dear, cool water of streams and rivers, although it fares well in deeper lakes and reservoirs. Adult fish forage for crayfish, smaller fish, and insects. Young bass feed on plankton and immature, water-bom insects. • Interesting Fact: The smallmouth is a good indicator of a healthy environment because of its intolerance of , polluted water.
