This letter is in regard to
the recent School Board hearing, and comments that were made at that hearing.
I meet with Dr. Robert Chappell on March 1, 2007 for an hour to discuss the budget, and where we could make some cuts without affecting teacher’s salaries, or the students. He was very open and very helpful and I appreciate the time he took with me to explain some numbers.
Here are the items and amounts where we can save money:
• The RCES before school supervisor: $2,090.00. We pay an aide to come to school 15 minutes before the 8 a.m. opening, because some parents drop their children off prior to the school day. If you want to save money, don’t bring your child to school before you are supposed to.
• Portable toilet rental fee: $3,780.00. Bathrooms are available at both entrances to both gymnasiums, which are located next to the fields. The two that are at the School Board field are paid for by RSL, not the school system.
• Mowing of the baseball and softball Helds and back soccer Field: $11,000.00. Those fields are county-owned. Why can’t the trustees come and mow them? The job isn’t being done well now, and most of the time, the coaches are doing it themselves.
* Cleaning of the schools: We pay a contractor $28,000 to clean the eighth grade wing after school. We already have a full time afternoon custodian who should be able to clean the whole school; if not, we need to find someone who is willing to do so. The same goes for the elementary school, where we pay two full- time janitors who should be able to clean the school in a day. Instead, we
