are paying part-time custodians to come in at night and clean at a cost of $31,391 a year.
• Dumpster fees: We pay $14,220 for dumpsters, when the Flatwood facility is right next door to both schools. We could go to Lowe’s or Home Depot and get a storage container, and have the night trash put in it. In the morning, the janitors can take it over to the dump.
• Carpet in the new wing: We have $5,000 slated for new carpet replacement in rotation. We should not be putting carpet in the school anyway, as the dust that the carpet holds affects kids with asthma and other allergies. Replace it with tile; we would save money in cleaning and replacement every year.
• Volunteer Coordinator and Adult Ed Program: We are paying $8,072 for someone to do this job, but there has been no Adult Education in a yearand-a-half. The volunteers who come to the schools are coming anyway. Most parents who want to volunteer come with out being asked. We have set aside $5,000 for Adult Education, but there; has not been a true program here in years. This does not include the GED program, which is funded by the state.
• Truancy officer: We are paying $53,544 plus benefits to a person to be the truancy/visiting teacher in our school. We are paying another person to do attendance at a salary of $8,422, plus benefits, plus the Volunteer Coordinator position. To me, truancy encompasses attendance. In order for the truancy officer to do an accurate and efficient job, my suggestion would be for that person to be doing attendance. Then they would know right away if a student were constantly absent.
