The Rappahannock County Public School chapters of the Technology Student Association (TSA) won five trophies this year at the 2007 regional competition. It was held at Mountain View High in Stafford County on March 10.
Joe Vickers and Tyler Crews won second place in the regional competition in the High School Systems Control Technology contest.
Each three member team was required to prepare for an on-site problem that they model in Lego® bricks that actually do something. Given only a 2 Vi hour time span, this team had to organize itself to problem solve possible solutions and then program the remote RCX 2.0 block to perform the necessary functions.
This year the students were given an RFP (request for proposal) for the flooding of a hospital emergency room. The Rappahannock team was one member short due to one of our seniors that could not attend. Vickers and Crews completed the problem, however, in spite of the shortcoming.
Not to be outdone by the high school members, Tiffany Wayland took first place for the Prepared Speech contest with her essay, “TSA, Breaking Down Barriers.”
The Middle School students swept this event with Adam Carter placing 2nd and Jessica Shaw placing third place.
Tiffany Wayland and Jessica Shaw also took 2nd and 3rd places respectively in the Technical Writing Challenge. The competition is designed to exhibit researching and writing skills.
The day long event consisted of last minute preparations, written tests, written reports, oral competitions, and on site problem solving. Jessica Shaw, Andrew Carter, Carolyn Vickers, Brittani Dodson, and Tiffany Wayland represented the middle school chapter.
The high school chapter was represented by Clay Vickers, Steven Butler, Jesse Palmer, Virginia Stickley, Anna Owens, Meagan Smith, Emily Raney, Joe Vickers, and Tyler Crew.
The students were accompanied by their advisers Ron and Layne Vickers.
Delegate Mark Cole welcomed all students to the conference and the Rappahannock seniors were able to speak with him for a few minutes.
