The Virginia Department of Transportation has concluded that the 78-year-old Rediviva Bridge, which was closed for safety reasons in December, will be demolished, McCarthy told the board Monday.
Neighboring property owners were given the opportunity to accept ownership of the span over the Covington River. But for liability reasons, none were willing to do so.
The supervisors had the option of taking funds out of county’s six-year transportation budget to fund a study on fixing the bridge. The study would have cost an estimated $25,000 to $30,000, plus additional costs to repair the structure.
On Monday, the supervisors accepted VDOTs resolution to demolish the bridge.
Hampton District Supervisor Bryant Lee represents the area where the bridge is located. He seemed reluctant to allow the demolition, but concluded that it was the best option available.
“I can’t see where it’s possible to take enough money out of the six-year plan" to fix the bridge," he said.
