I'm still apologizing to my siblings for that!

Rained out birthday parties aside, though, we celebrated each and every birthday, young or old, as a big deal. It was an opportunity to celebrate the fact that this person was here on earth with us and we’d had another yea!1 together.

I actually didn’t realize until well into adulthood that not everyone looked at birthdays in the same light. I always expected that the people closest to me, once they knew my birth date, would make sure that there were big celebrations each year.

It turns out that some of the people in my life are of the “let’s ignore birthdays” school. And since that’s what they want on their own birthday they make the same assumption about everyone efte. I do the same thing in reverse.

And so, after numerous disappointing birthdays waiting for other people to create celebrations, I took ownership of my own birthday happiness! I now start weeks in advance making sure everyone knows my birthday is coming up and that they’re expected to acknowledge the event. That doesn’t mean buying me gifts! But it does mean cards, phone calls, e-mails or whatever is appropriate.
