Budget hearing
The non-school portion of the county budget drew few public comments on Monday evening.
County Sheriff Larry Sherertz was the main speaker during the public hearing, as he asked the supervisors for an additional $52,789 above what the county provided his office last year.
First, Sherertz asked for funding to provide $5,000 salary increases for his deputies. The current draft budget provides for $4,000 pay increases.
The sheriff said he wants to bring his staff’s salaries more in line with what the local state troopers are paid.
Because of Rappahannock’s high cost of living, state troopers who work in the county were given a 24.9 percent pay increase last year, Sherertz said.
