Fluorescents bulbs have two main drawbacks, the MacPhersons said.

First, the lighting quality for some fluorescents is not always as good as it is with incandescent bulbs. John and Diane went through dozens of hours of research and some trial and error before finding bulbs that created the warm, cozy feeling they want for their inn.

At a bed and breakfast, every dark comer in every room has to have a fight to brighten the space to a guest’s liking'. Fluorescents don’t always work with that goal, because dimmable, globe and decorative bulbs can take several minutes to warm up. Lighting quality has to work on demand or guests will think something is broken, Diane said.

Second, fluorescent bulbs with larger wattages are also bigger in size. The MacPhersons had to purchase new harps for some of the house’s lamps to fit the high-wattage fluorescent bulbs.

Roughly 60 percent of the house’s fight fixtures have been converted to fluorescent bulbs, Diane said.
