By Jed Duvall Special to the Rappahannock News Science tells us that some homo sapiens, two-legged creatures of the early 21st Century, many found in the foothills of the mountains known as the Blue Ridge, would conduct an annual celebration of the love and care of their four-footed companions. These lesser, furred animals, known variously as pets, canines, hounds, doggies or - in some cases - kootchie-koos, were indeed dogs; loyal companions to the humans for several | centuries. Such a celebration, involving song and dance and platters of ? (human) food, was conducted in a closed hall known as the j Schoolhouse in Sperryville this past Saturday night. > The humans gathered in a large number, perhaps 120. The young were in their 20s. The oldest among them remember voting for Eisenhower, or Stevenson. They cruised the silent auction for paintings and drawings; for various services such as fancy dinners; for small gift items, and even furniture. The participants in this ritual partook of the bounty of the Epicurious Cow, including salmon, pasta, and salad. As evidence of their regard for canines, there was also a polenta, com and cheese concoction in the shape of a dog bone treat. On the dance floor, their feet were made to move by daneo caller, Brad Sayler. He was in command to the times of the Morrison Brothers Band; that’s Jim, the dad, and sons Will and Owen.
