June 9: Calling AU Hands

Big and small people alike are invited to the first annual Planting Party to be held at the RCES county yard garden, on Saturday, June 9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. We will be building raised beds, planting a Butterfly garden, creating mulched pathways and a compost pile for our elementary students. Dublin-born Edmund Kavanaugh appears to decuss his life’s work as a master goldsmith. He has accrued marry testimonials during his long, golden career. Among other important commissions are: a replica of the 170-year-old City of London mace, suitable for traveling; 130 ceremonial maces used by U. S. rnitary bands; the championship trophy for the Amateur Golf Association; the Prince PNBp Challenge Cup for the annual Henley Royal Regatta race; and, the National Football League’s Vince Lombardi Trophy given annually to the Super Bowl champion. What he does so beautifully is ‘repousse,” which is the tedious process of transforming thin sheets of gold or silver into beautiful ornaments by tapping out designs from the reverse side. "Repousse” flourished during the Mednval and Renaissance periods but has diminished in modem times because it is so time consuming. In the United States, besides Mr. Kavanaugh, there are only four other known artisans specializing in “repousse* at this time and no new apprentices betog trained. «

June 13-14: SCORE

announces auditions

The American Chicken of SCORE (String, Choral, Orff, and Recorder Ensemble) wiH hold auctions June 13 and 14 for their ensemble program for the 2007/2008 season which begins in September. Children in rising grades 3 through 6 are invited to try out for this unique, musical opportunity. Based in Warrenton, SCORE was founded in 1994 by Artistic Director John Krumich, Betsy Porter and Catharine Waiczak. The group has grown to over 40 chikken from over 20 area pubic and private schools, and several home schools, representing six counties in Virginia's northern piedmont region.

The children in SCORE rehearse throughout the season, September through May once per week, and are trained chorally and instrumentaly on Orff instruments, recorders, and optionally on tradkionai string instruments. The group performs 4 to 5 times during the season. Tuition assistance is available.

Plans for next season include the Warrenton Wassail with renowned to* musician Mike Seeger and a fulty staged tok cpera in collaboration with Longwood University. Auditions wtH be held, by appointment, in the Highland Center for the Arts choral room on Wednesday, June 13and Thursday June 14. Auctions last approximately 10 minutes and do not require any special preparations or prior musical experience.
