Shenandoah officials were cautious while discussing the proposal, which has caused unrest in the county after a jail site was proposed in Shenandoah.
Shenandoah County Sheriff" Timothy C. Carter said that many of Shenandoah County citizens were surprised by the jail site proposal.
“People were not really worried about it when we were talking about locations in other counties,” he said. Carter, however, declined to voice his opinion for the jail. “It’s not up for me to decide,” he said, “It’s a county decision either way and I would stand with that decision. . . it doesn’t really matter which side of the issue I’m on.”
Shenandoah County Supervisor Dennis Morris recently opposed the site selection in his district, as well as the need for Shenandoah County to participate in the regional jail.
“I need not squish the regional jail concept, but I need to do what’s best for Shenandoah County and its citizens” said Morris during a press conference last week. “I will not support a regional jail in Shenandoah County.”
Shenandoah County Administrator Vincent E. Poling was vague about the County’s position on the proposal.
“Theoretically the planning study and the community based corrections plan should be finished in November,” he said, “I don’t know if that will happen or not, I can’t say that at the present.”
Pbling said that county officials believed it was important for the county to go through the evaluation process, but were not concerned about the jail being located in Shenandoah County. “We never aggressively tried to bring it to our county,” he said.
Poling is currently awaiting the results of a June 11 public meeting before the next meeting on the regional jail on June 13.
The proposed Shenandoah location is in Toms Brook, nearly an hour long commute from Washington, Va. Prisoner transfers to the facility would probably have to travel about 40 miles through Front Royal to get to I66 and connect with 1-81. A site in Warren County would probably cut that time in half
Currently there are no plans for a regional jail site in Rappahannock County.
