of the health-insurance costs for retirees who have served 20 or more years in the sheriff’s office. The current budget allots funding to cover 50 percent of those health expenses.
Sherertz said his deputies are no more or less important than other county employees, but he emphasized to the board that his staff performs an “extremely dangerous job.”
“If you don’t have public safety, everything else is a moot point,” he said.
Of the county’s $20.3 million proposed budget for fiscal 2008, nearly $8.2 million goes toward non-school expenses. The supervisors approved the public schools’ $12.1 million budget in May.
The board will adopt the overall county budget at a meeting at 7:30 p.m. on June 25.
Amendment
off the table
Willie Smith has withdrawn his application to amend the county’s zoning ordinance to allow auto sales in the Highway Commercial Zone along U.S. 211 between Sperryville and Shenandoah National Park.
The County Planning Commission recommended the amendment for approval at its monthly meeting on May 23, but citizen opposition since then led Smith to rescind his request.
County Administrator John McCarthy said Smith indicated that he plans to reapply for an amendment that would require a special-exception permit for auto sales in the tourist-oriented area.
Smith owns the property that was formerly used as Cooter’s Place. At the planning commission’s meeting, he said he wants to sell vintage cars and other automobiles to generate more revenue on the property, which already includes a snack bar.
