“In all cultures there has been purification rituals of fires that are purposed towards keeping the planet healthy and calm,” said Lisa Powers, noting that the effects of the ritual effect the immediate area as well as the greater atmosphere of the planet. “In our history there has never before been such high levels of pollution,” she added. “Agnihotra purifies the atmosphere of pollutants and neutralizes harmful radiations.”
As the fires burned, the individuals chanted certain mantras. The sunset mantras loosely translated into English, mean, “Agni, (Fire), Lord of all Created beings.” and, “This belongs to Agni, (Fire), not me.” The Sunrise mantras are similar, only they call upon “Prajapati” (lord of creatures.) Prajapati is a Hindu deity that is supposed to preside over procreation, and is considered a protector of life.
“It doesn’t really matter what the words mean,” said Powers, “only the vibrations from the words.”
Each fire ritual has a different purpose and time, allowing for different effects.
