style of outdoor tumiture. It is very heavy and has a reputation of being uncomfortable without cushions. Many manufacturers have duplicated this look in aluminum that has been powder-coated for durability, is rust proof, and is produced in many styles and finishes.

Many of these materials used in the frames of the outdoor furniture for seating purposes can be combined with mesh, vinyl strapping, and/or cushions. Cushions that can be used outdoors have improved a great deal over the • last five years. Some of you recall those sticky floral plastic fabrics covering cushions on old porch gliders. Now you can find wonderful fabrics that feel much more comfortable and cool, and are not going to fade, mold, or mildew, even if they get a little wet. It is still recommended that cushions be stored out of the elements, and storage benches to match your furniture are available. One of the sources I use advertises their outdoor line of fabrics as 100 percent solution-dyed yarns, waterrepellent, stain resistant, bleach cleanable with exceptional light fastness. Designers now have access to more outdoor fabrics than are generally available in the stores.

Outdoor decor now includes the use of area rugs made entirely of polypropylene, This type of material allows spot cleaning with soap and water or hosing off if they get dirty. An outdoor area rug would be useful under a table on a porch or on a patio, or as a definition of space in a seating area. Many designs can be found, including the look of sea grass or sisal with borders, animal prints, or even the look of classics like scrolling or traditional floral motifs. In addition, these rugs would be great for indoors in mud rooms or entry ways with high traffic.

Outdoor accessories abound. “Yard Art” is very “in” in the forms of sculptures, urns, iron grills work, cast urethane or resin plaques, clocks, stepping stones, bird houses, bird baths, mosaics, flower boxes, and planters of all types. Water features add a great element, whether in a small fountain, pond, or a full blown waterfall! Even outdoor paintings are available that are reproduced on aluminum composite and folded to create a stretch canvas look. A fire pit or a chiminea add a great deal of ambiance to a twilight dinner on the patio.
