Hitt wants to see lights on the football field and a computer for every student. And she hopes to offset the cost of expanding facilities and resources by cutting waste in the schools and increasing fund raising.
Hitt, whose impassioned letters to the editor have appeared frequently in The Rappahannock News, discussed in a June letter ways to cut spending at the schools without reducing teachers’ salaries or resources for the students.
One item she identified as ripe to be trimmed was plans to install carpeting in the schools, which she said would be unnecessary and costly. Her proposed cuts would amount to a savings of $116,975, she wrote.
Hitt would also like to ramp up fund raising.
"There’s so much money that can be made if it’s done in the right way” she said.
One idea is to offer businesses advertising opportunities in exchange for donations. Hitt explained that she helped arrange a deal in which Burgas ‘N Things, a popular burger and milkshake stop in Sperryville, placed an advertising sign at Rappahannock County High School.
