“Once we got into this and really started investigating it, we were able to solve cases in multiple jurisdictions,’’ she said.
Her investigation led her to other Virginia counties, including Prince William and Warren, and other states as far away as Tennessee. Smith worked with officers from other jurisdictions as well as U.S. marshals and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
Authorities have recovered some of the handguns stolen from Trading Post. Some of the firearms were found as far away as Baltimore. One of the stolen guns was used in a robbery in Manassas.
In August, The Washington Times reported that ATT1 agents found a gun confiscated during an Aug. 16 traffic stop in Washington, D.C., was one of the firearms stolen from Trading Post.
Smith said indictments in the case could be issued as soon as November.
