building to the rescue squad several months ago, before the post’s charter was ever in danger of being revoked. The members voted to approve donating the building and that vote was recorded in the post’s meeting minutes, Hitt said.
“That was what I originally wanted to do,” he said. “Even if we had been allowed to stay a little while longer, that would have been our mission to get that switched over to the rescue squad.”
A missing piece of paper is the root of Post 1150’s problems. Shifflett said the post violated the Vi va’s national bylaws by missing an Aug. 1 deadline to turn in the election report for the post’s new officers.
The post’s leadership was notified in mid-August that the charter was scheduled to be revoked Sept. 3. Post members had County Administrator John McCarthy contact Sen. Jim Webb’s (D) office to tell him about the situation and explain how it could affect emergency response in Sperryville.
Post members were of the understanding that they had been granted 90 days to deliver the election report, but the VFW’s state officials never heard about the grace period and a staff person at Webb’s office said they never asked the VFW to make such an allowance.
“We wouldn’t impose that on somebody,” said Kimberly Hunter, Webb’s press secretary.
