The infected high school student, who played on the school s football team, was diagnosed with MRSA He was admitted to the hospital last Fnday and underwent surgery at the University of Virginia Medical Center on Saturday.
According to the student’s father, “he is recovering well but has two more weeks of IV antibiotics to take.”
He was scheduled to be released yesterday.
Saturday’s home football contest with Clarke County has also been canceled as a result of the incident. Thursday’s volleyball game versus Madison will go on as planned.
There has been only one confirmed case of MRSA at Rappahannock County Schools, but there have been a couple other similar incidents that have not been confirmed.
Superintendent Chappell said that soon after learning of the student’s diagnosis, school officials met with football team members, who might have bad contact with the student. Those with symptoms resembling staph were advised to seek medical treatment. Chappell said three students were admitted at hospitals, observed and treated with antibiotics. Staph infections were not confirmed in any of those students, Chappell said.
