the Food Lion and told her that I would be happy to take her back to the trail, but not for another three hours. She said that she wouldn’t be that long and would probably find a ride back up the hill. I said a silent prayer that her next chauffeur would not be a “whacko.”
Early that afternoon, my husband called. It turns out he spotted an AT hiker at Food Lion and struck up a conversation. He offered to take the hiker back to the trail, but he and our little grandson were on their way to have lunch at their favorite restaurant. He couldn’t make the trip up Chester Gap till after lunch. Being a true “AT Minister,” he invited the hiker to have lunch with them. After lunch and sharing stories, the three headed to the trail. Don asked the hiker if she walked into town or if she got a ride. She said, “I got a ride. A nice woman stopped on her way to a Bible study.....” You guessed it - he picked up my hiker! My prayer was answered - no “whacko” chauffeur!
