On Saturday, October 20 at 8 p.m., Celtic music will again be heard at the Theatre at Washington, Virginia. For their annual fall concert here, the popular duo Linn Barnes and Allison Hampton have invited special guests Robert Hill and Kathryn Johnson to join them in a program which includes American music and music of the Renaissance as well as the traditional Celtic music for which Linn and Allison are best known.
The four accomplished musicians between them play on eight instruments: two lutes, two harps, viol, Terz-guitar, Uilleann pipes . . . and a banjo. The program contrasts the v sprightly and elegant dances of the courts of 16th century Europe with traditional Irish jigs and reels, all played on the beautifully compatible plucked instruments, the lute and harp.
Most summers, Linn and Allison give concerts in Europe. This year they traveled to Paris where they had the privilege of performing at the churches of Saint Sulpice and Saint Germain des Pres, the latter reputedly the oldest church in Paris. The recording which they made in Paris is due to be released this fall, and is titled “Rose Window: Meditations from Cathedrals of Paris”. Some of the music composed
