“Most of this is precautionary,” athletic director Bob Czekaj said. “We want to ensure that our kids are safe.”
Rappahannock County High School Principal Robyn Puryear wrote in a letter to school parents: “We are in the process of implementing an array of control measures, including environmental cleaning, thorough disinfecting of any exposed areas in the school, parental notification, and improving hand washing practices by students.”
According to Ethan Saliba, the Head Athletic Trainer at the University ofVirginia, there have been more and more MRSA outbreaks in recent years.
- “It’s definitely more prevalent in the last few years. Two or three cases isn’t an epidemic, but it should be a cause for concern,” Saliba said. “Some schools get five or six cases a week. In those cases the Center for Disease control needs to brought in.”
“This kind of staph infection is an evolutionary bacteria,” Saliba said. “It has become resistant to standard antibiotic treatment. The most important thing you can do is educate all the athletes. Teach them the importance of hygiene, because . once the infection is in the locker room it can be tough to get rid of Athletes think they are bulletproof but they’ve got be cautious.”
