Loomis, being the Blackhawks leader, refused to sit on the sideline, though. He taped his arm just below the elbow and tried to play.
Midway through the first quarter, the pain had become almost unbearable. Still he gritted his teeth and gutted it out.
Loomis fumbled late in the first quarter after taking a shot in the arm. Delhi recovered and ran it back fin* a touchdown to go up 14-0. On his next carry, Loomis fumbled again, and the Bulldogs would score again.
Loomis, the toughest kid I know, was sidelined by MRSA.
In the locker room at halftime, the tape was removed, and the redness had gone from below the elbow to just above. Loomis was sweating profusely. Starting to shake.
His parents were called to the locker room and they decided to take their son to the emergency room.
The Loomis family was told that Stevie had MRSA. And it was life threatening. If they had waited four more hours, their 17-year old son would have been deal
Loomis underwent surgery that night and was hospitalized for almost three weeks.- He lost nearly 40 pounds. And missed most of wrestling season, where he was supposed to be a state championship contender for the t 189-pound title.
Over that next week, four more Oxford players were diagnosed with MRSA. None were as serious as Loomis’, but for nearly a month the community was on edge.
MRSA shows no mercy. The only way to get rid of it is to kick it in the butt early. That’s what Rappahannock County has chosen to do and we should applaud that decision. Even If that means we’ve got to sit home Saturday and sulk
